Assignment 1 ENGB1 Proficiency
1. Style: Style in the context of academic writing is how the writer presents the text to the reader. That is depending on facts like if the text is writer-oriented – which is more informal, personal writing- or reader-oriented, which is intended for other readers and has a style that suits different subjects. The style can be varied by a lot of different ways, like:
• Academic or personal tone
• Structure of the text: word usage, syntax, “building blocks” of genres
• Underlying purpose of the text: What is the message the writer wants to convey
2.Formal writing:
GSK offers to share data to help fight malaria fight
GlaxoSmithKline is to take the unprecedented step of sharing its scientific data and laboratories in an effort to wipe out tropical diseases.
Andrew Witty, chief executive of GSK and the driving force behind the move, said the drug company has a "genuine appetite to change the landscape of healthcare for the world's poorest people".
Africa is estimated to carry 70pc of the worldwide healthcare burden but receives just 3pc of global healthcare resources. Mr. Witty said the issue was "very personal" to him after periods working on the continent.

Informal writing:
I haven’t done any high-lining myself yet, it looks CRAZy though, and they say your mind must be like steel trap. Or check out this clip of Will Stanhope from Alias Cinemas doing some crazy bouldering and the classic Flight of the Challenger here in Squamish. Iz gonna be a sicky film I reckon. Anyway, see you tomorrow night.

Comparison of the text types:
Formal writing: The texts overriding purpose is to inform about a certain issue. It is not personal or indicating. It includes correct language without contractions, slang or vernacular.
Informal language: The texts main purpose is to convey a feeling or thoughts of the writer. The text is personal with spoken language, contractions and innovate sentence constructions and spelling.
3. Formal: Jogging
Jogging is a form of exercise containing trotting or running slowly or fast. The main purpose of jogging is to increase a healthy body and mind. There have been several surveys about benefits of running. The latest research establishes the connection between physical health and a person’s mental status. It has been proved that people who take care of their fitness and shape also have more mental capacity. Jogging is a good way to increase fitness and reduce stress.
Informal: A relaxed jogger
I really think jogging is the best relaxation medicine you can get! Especially after times of “no-jogging”, it is striking how the body is suffering of the lack of endorphin kicks! The best way of avoiding a mental brake down is to “run for your life”! Just put on some easy going clothes and head of for the nearest running track. It doesn’t mind if you aren’t a fast runner. And I already hear every one objecting: But it is SO boring…! Yes, I said that too, years ago. It’s boring the first 50 times but then you’re hooked. Suddenly a new world is appearing to you. The world of a huge variety of joggers: Professional, laid back, chick and sometimes a bit crazy joggers. Briefly, it’s awesome!

Hey Marja, great work on this assignment!
SvaraRaderaYou picked excellent examples of formal/informal writing and it is obvious from your description of them and your own formal/informal text that you know the difference!
I was particularly pleased by your choice of topic - I am hooked on running as well...
A few notes on language:
1. "Style in the context of academic writing is the WAY IN WHICH the writer presents the text to the reader. THE STYLE OF A PIECE OF WRITING MAY INDICATE if the text is writer-oriented... or reader-oriented, IN OTHER WORDS intended for other readers. IT THEN has a style that suits THE SUBJECT. The style can be varied IN a lot of different ways... What is the message THAT the writer wants to convey?"
2. "The TEXT'S overriding purpose is to inform about a certain issue. It is not personal or ???. It includes correct language without contractions, slang or vernacular LANGUAGE."
3. "The TEXT'S main purpose is to convey a feeling or THE thoughts of the writer. The text is personal, INCLUDING spoken language, contractions and INNOVATIVE sentence constructions and spelling."
4. "Jogging is a form of exercise WHICH INVOLVES trotting or running.... The main purpose of jogging is to PROMOTE a healthy body and mind. There have been several surveys about THE benefits of running. ...people who take care of their fitness and shape also have A GREATER mental capacity."
5. In an informal text, it is OK to be less correct. However: "suffering FROM the lack of" sounds better, as does "the best way TO AVOID a mental BREAKDOWN..." "head FOR the running track" Are you saying: "It doesn't MATTER if you aren't a fast runner"? "Everyone" (one word)
Great work!
